Dr. Barnes has received recognition for her spirit of excellence from many organizations--local to national.

Moreover, her scholarship and community engagement projects have received funding support to take her work from idea to fruition. Most recently, she was successful in obtaining a national grant in the amount of a quarter million dollars from the Institute for Museums and Library Services for capacity building and curriculum development at the Lillie Carroll Jackson Civil Rights Museum. She maintains a high success rate in grant writing obtaining operational support for Hosanna School Museum for $45k and $100k for restoration the historic Freedmen's Bureau school,, Mccomas Institue, to name a few.
